If you file a Schedule C, you pay 15.3% self-employment tax on top of income tax โ but IRC ยง164(f) lets you deduct half of that SE tax above the line, before AGI is calculated. This calculator shows the exact deduction for your profit, how much it lowers your AGI, and the real gap between self-employed and W-2 take-home at the same gross pay.
Why wages matter: the 12.4% Social Security portion of SE tax stops at the $176,100 wage base (2025). If you already paid SS tax on a day job, your SE Social Security tax is recalculated against the remaining room โ which is often zero. Enter $0 if self-employment is your only income.

Every row above is produced by this page's own calculation, not estimated by hand. "AGI After" is net profit minus the ยง164(f) deduction. Total federal tax includes both SE tax and income tax, after the standard deduction and a simplified 20% QBI deduction. State tax is excluded.
The deduction exists to correct an asymmetry. A W-2 employee's payroll tax is split: the employer pays 7.65% and the employee pays 7.65%, and the employee never sees the employer half as income. A self-employed person pays both halves โ 15.3% โ on the same earnings. Deducting half of the SE tax restores rough parity by letting that portion escape income tax.
| Feature | ยง164(f) half-SE-tax deduction | A typical itemized deduction |
|---|---|---|
| Requires itemizing? | No โ available with the standard deduction | Yes, must exceed the standard deduction |
| Reduces AGI? | Yes | No โ only taxable income |
| Helps qualify for IRA deduction, credits? | Yes, because AGI falls | No effect on AGI-based tests |
| Reported where? | Schedule 1, line 15 โ Form 1040 line 10 | Schedule A |
Because AGI drives eligibility for Roth IRA contributions, the IRA deduction phase-out, education credits, and the ACA premium tax credit, half of the SE tax deduction can be worth more than its face value for a self-employed filer sitting near one of those thresholds.
Half โ not all. Entering the full 15.3% figure on Schedule 1 overstates the deduction and is one of the most frequent errors in self-prepared returns. The second most common error is claiming the deduction and then also deducting the same amount again as a business expense on Schedule C, which double-counts it.
The employer-equivalent half that is not deductible under ยง164(f) is still recoverable indirectly two ways: through the 20% QBI deduction (ยง199A), and through the fact that the 92.35% multiplier already excludes the employer share from the SE tax base itself. Together these roughly neutralise the remaining gap for a sole proprietor, which is why the effective self-employment tax burden is closer to a W-2 employee's than the headline 15.3% suggests.
First-year freelancers who quit a salaried job mid-year are frequently surprised twice: once by the 15.3% SE tax, and once by discovering that only half of it is deductible. Running the number before the first quarterly payment prevents both shocks. A designer who nets $45,000 owes roughly $6,358 in SE tax and deducts $3,179 โ at a 12% marginal rate that deduction is worth about $381 of income tax, on top of the self-employment tax already paid.
Contractors near the Social Security wage base ($176,100 for 2025) need to watch a different detail: once W-2 wages plus SE earnings cross that line, the 12.4% Social Security piece switches off and only the 2.9% Medicare piece continues. The deduction shrinks with it, which is why the deduction is not a fixed 7.65% of profit.
Side-hustlers with a day job are the most likely to overpay. If W-2 wages already exceed $176,100, no additional Social Security tax is due on Schedule C income โ only 2.9% Medicare plus the 0.9% additional Medicare over the applicable threshold. Filing without accounting for existing wages can mean paying roughly four times too much.
The ยง164(f) deduction lowers AGI, and AGI determines how much of a traditional IRA contribution is deductible when you (or a spouse) are covered by a workplace plan. For a single filer covered by a 401(k), the phase-out in 2025 runs from $79,000 to $89,000 of MAGI. A self-employed person with $85,000 of net profit has an AGI of about $78,995 after the half-SE-tax deduction โ just under the phase-out floor, which can preserve a full $7,000 IRA deduction that would otherwise be partially lost.
For those using a SEP-IRA or solo 401(k), the same mechanics apply to the employer contribution, which is capped at 25% of net self-employment earnings โ itself defined after subtracting the half-SE-tax deduction. The deduction therefore compounds: it lowers AGI, and it also changes the base for the retirement contribution calculation.
⚠️ Estimates only. This page models the 2025 federal rules for a sole proprietor with no other income adjustments. It uses the standard deduction, a simplified 20% QBI deduction without the ยง199A wage or SSTB limitations, and excludes state tax, credits, itemized deductions, and retirement contributions. The Social Security wage base is $176,100 for 2025. Confirm your figures with Schedule SE, Schedule 1, and a qualified tax preparer before filing.
