How much does surrogacy cost? Estimate gestational surrogacy expenses โ agency fees, surrogate compensation, medical, legal, escrow, insurance, and travel โ across agency, independent, and international paths, with monthly savings targets.
With an agency, a typical journey totals $100,000โ$200,000+. All components are on by default โ toggle to match your plan.
Independent surrogacy skips the agency โ you manage matching and coordination yourself. Typical totals run $60,000โ$120,000 when lean. Toggle components to match your arrangement.
International surrogacy is often cheaper โ base range $60,000โ$150,000 โ but adds legal and immigration complexity. A country-tier multiplier (0.8 / 1.0 / 1.3) is applied to the base range.
Inputs: All seven components included, 24-month savings horizon.
Calculation: Sum of lows = $105,000; sum of highs = $210,000. Midpoint = $157,500. Monthly = $157,500 รท 24 = $6,562.50.
Inputs: No agency fee, all other components included, 36-month savings horizon.
Calculation: Sum of lows = $90,000; sum of highs = $180,000. Midpoint = $135,000. Monthly = $135,000 รท 36 = $3,750.00.
Inputs: Lower tier (ร0.8) applied to the $60,000โ$150,000 base, 36-month horizon.
Calculation: Adjusted low = $48,000; high = $120,000. Midpoint = $84,000. Monthly = $84,000 รท 36 โ $2,333.33.
Note: Examples use typical U.S. estimates. Actual costs vary widely โ always get itemized quotes and legal advice before committing.
Midpoint = (low + high) รท 2. Sum lows for the low estimate, highs for the high estimate; savings months are 24 or 36.
Multipliers: Mexico / Central America ร0.8 ยท Ukraine / Georgia ร1.0 ยท United States ร1.3. The multiplier adjusts the base range for the country tier.
| Component | Typical Range | What It Covers |

| Surrogate Compensation | $35,000 โ $60,000 | Base pay to the surrogate |

Independent journeys exclude the agency fee; international journeys use the base range and multiplier.
Choose agency, independent, or international. Agency journeys are most common and most expensive; independent saves the agency fee; international is cheaper but adds legal and immigration risk.
Turn off components your plan doesn't include, e.g. insurance covered by an employer benefit. The range updates to the selected sums.
Choose 24 or 36 months for the monthly savings needed to reach the midpoint. Budget toward the high end โ real costs often run higher.
An agency-facilitated journey typically totals $100,000โ$200,000+. The biggest items are surrogate compensation ($35,000โ$60,000) and medical expenses ($25,000โ$50,000) โ IVF, embryo transfer, prenatal care, and delivery. The agency fee ($15,000โ$30,000) covers screening, matching, and coordination.
The rest is process and protection: legal fees ($5,000โ$15,000) for both attorneys, escrow ($5,000โ$10,000) to hold and disburse funds, insurance ($15,000โ$30,000) for surrogate health, life & disability coverage, and travel & miscellaneous ($5,000โ$15,000). Independent journeys drop the agency fee; international journeys use a country-tier range of $60,000โ$150,000.
The surrogate does not receive the full six-figure total โ compensation is one component among many. Base compensation typically runs $35,000โ$60,000 for a first-time carrier, paid in milestone installments. On top of base pay, surrogates get a monthly allowance, and medical expenses are covered separately.
Compensation varies by state, region, and experience โ repeat surrogates earn more, and some contracts add bonuses for twins or cesarean delivery. Take-home is usually roughly a third of the total journey cost.
Savings. Most intended parents fund part of the journey from savings. Saving the midpoint of an agency journey over 24 months means putting away roughly $6,500 per month.
Loans and financing. Fertility loans, personal loans, and home-equity lines are common. Compare APRs โ interest on a $150,000 journey can add tens of thousands.
Grants and employer benefits. Nonprofit fertility grants can offset part of the cost, and more employers cover surrogacy medical and legal expenses. Ask HR what your plan includes.
